SYNOPSIS

Tamer El Said’s ambitious debut feature tells the fictional story of a filmmaker from downtown Cairo played by Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, United 93, Green Zone, Tigers, The Square) as he struggles to capture the soul of a city on edge while facing loss in his own life. Shot in Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad and Berlin during the two years before the outbreak of revolution in Egypt, the film’s multi-layered stories are a visually rich exploration of friendship, loneliness and life in cities shaped by the shadows of war and adversity.

DIRECTOR’S BIO 

Tamer El Said is a filmmaker living in Cairo where he was born in 1972. He studied filmmak- ing in the High Cinema Institute – Cairo and journalism in Cairo University. He went on to make many documentaries and short films that received several international and local awards. Tamer founded Zero Production in 2007 to produce independent films. He also founded, along with others, Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre in Egypt. In the Last Days of the City is his first feature length film.

The film was co-written by Rasha Salti and Tamer El Said. It is produced by Tamer El Said and Khalid Abdalla, alongside co-producers Hana Al Bayaty, Michel Balagué (Sieniawka, My Love Awaits Me by the Sea, Face B), Marcin Malaczszak (Sieniawka, The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills) and Cat Villiers (The Proposition, No Man’s Land, The Nar- row Frame of Midnight, Tigers, The Last Photograph). It is also the last film of the legendary Production Designer Salah Marei (Al Mummia/The Night of Counting the Years) who passed away in 2011.
It is a Zero Production Film made in co-production with Sunnyland Film – an ART (Arab Radio and Television) company, Mengamuk Films and Autonomous.
It will be released in Egypt by Zawya Distribution (www.zawyacinema.com), and in Germany by w o l f, a new space for film set to open this spring (www.wolfberlin.org).

The film is also a recipient of the 2015 Torino Film Lab World Distribution Award, the 2010 Carthage CNC Prize for Work In Progress, and the 2014 Takmil JCC Post-Production award (Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage).
